The football season is upon us no, not the Premier League, well yes, the amazing show of the Premier League has started. We are talking about American Football The NFL!!! The 2022 NFL season started on Friday the 9th of September and with all the big hits and speed at which the players move we are bound to see some significant injuries. If you are currently experiencing any issues in line with the top 4 injuries sustained in American Football or want to reduce the risk of sustaining these types of injuries read on to see what our expert Physiotherapist can do for you.
The top 4 injuries are:
- Knee injuries
- Foot and ankle injuries
- Concussion
- Shoulder injuries
Knee injuries
Due to the speed, agility and power of the players in combination with the demands of the sport, the risk of knee injury is high. Specifically, to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) and the Meniscus. The knee has the highest rate of injury in the NFL with 16% of all injuries recorded as a knee injury, with running backs and wide receivers being the players at most risk. If you are currently experiencing any knee pain, have a ligament or knee joint injury and would like to get back to sport or everyday activities in the shortest time possible our team will guide you through the process. Alternatively, if you are in the fortunate situation to be injury free and would like a better understanding of how strong you are, if you have any asymmetries that may put you at risk of injury or you are keen on where you stand in comparison to normative data and would like a baseline measurement of your bodies capabilities, our VALD Human Performance Technology is just the thing for you. Foot and ankle injuries
A contact sport always brings with it a risk of ankle injury due to external forces acting upon the body and causing stress to soft tissue and bony structures. A staggering 71% of injuries from 2016 through to 2021 were due to contact. In addition, the advancements in footwear to promote athletic performance is not always conducive for support or protection as they are generally geared towards a reduction in weight to favour speed. If you are having foot and/or ankle problems our physiotherapist will assess and provide you with a plan of care to get you back out there doing what you love doing. We provide a industry leading FootScan analysis which provides instant data of your foot biomechanics when you walk, run and jump. This will highlight any areas of risk within your foot and is great for anyone that has suffered with foot and ankle injuries. Custom orthotics in conjunction with a comprehensive rehabilitation plan significantly reduce the risk of future injury.
Concussion
Due to high velocity tackles concussion is prevalent in the NFL regardless of the protective equipment worn. It is a trauma to the brain that can take a long time to recover from. Neck strength has been shown to reduce the risk of concussion. If you play sports like American Football and maybe at risk of concussion our team can conduct a concussion baseline screen and asses your neck strength with our VALD Human Performance Technology.
Shoulder injuries
The quarterbacks in the NFL are generally the players that sustain the most shoulder injuries, these can occur through repetitive strain, so repeatedly throwing the ball. This can lead to tendinopathy of the shoulder. Traumatic shoulder injuries also occur through contact, and these can result in shoulder dislocations or acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injury. Our VALD Human Performance Technology provides unrivalled insight into shoulder health, it will highlight any weaknesses and asymmetries. This information will be used by our physio team to design your bespoke shoulder rehabilitation plan.
