What Is a Sports Injury?

Sports physiotherapy is a specialist branch of physiotherapy focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries related to sport and physical activity. Unlike general physiotherapy, sports physio takes into account the specific physical demands of your sport, your training load, your movement patterns, and your goals for return to performance.

At ALO, sports physiotherapy isn’t just about treating the injury in front of us, it’s about understanding why it happened, what needs to change to prevent it happening again, and how to get you back to your sport performing at or above your pre-injury level.

You don’t need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports physiotherapy. We treat everyone from Premier League footballers to people who injured themselves on their first 5k, the principle is the same: expert, evidence-based care focused on getting you back to what you love.

Common Sports Injuries We See

Muscle tears and strains
From mild Grade 1 strains to complete Grade 3 tears, muscle injuries require graded loading and progressive rehabilitation to restore full strength and prevent scar tissue complications. Hamstring, quadriceps, calf, and groin tears are among the most common we treat.

Ligament sprains

Ankle sprains are the most common sports injury in the world, but ligament injuries can occur at the knee (ACL, PCL, MCL), wrist, and shoulder. Severity ranges from mild stretching to complete rupture, each requiring a different rehabilitation approach.

Tendon injuries
Tendinopathy is an overuse injury affecting the Achilles, patella (knee), rotator cuff (shoulder), and elbow tendons. Unlike acute injuries, tendon problems respond best to specific loading programmes rather than rest, and our physiotherapists are experienced in the latest evidence-based tendon rehabilitation protocols.

Stress fractures
Common in runners, dancers, and athletes in high-impact sports, stress fractures are hairline cracks caused by repetitive loading. Early identification is critical, continued training through a stress fracture significantly worsens the injury and recovery time.

Joint injuries
Dislocations, meniscus tears, cartilage damage, and labral tears at the hip and shoulder require careful management to restore stability and prevent recurrence. Many can be managed without surgery with the right physiotherapy.

Overuse and chronic injuries
Runner’s knee (PFPS), IT band syndrome, shin splints, and impingement syndromes develop gradually from training load errors, biomechanical issues, or equipment problems. We assess the root cause, not just the site of pain, to produce lasting results.

ALO VALD

Common Sports Injuries We See?

VALD performance testing
We use VALD force plates and dynamometers to objectively measure strength, power, and limb symmetry throughout your rehabilitation. This means return-to-sport decisions are based on data, not subjective feel, reducing re-injury risk and giving you (and your coach or manager) evidence of your readiness.

TECAR therapy
Radiofrequency electrotherapy that accelerates soft tissue healing, reduces inflammation, and allows earlier loading of injured structures. Particularly effective for muscle tears, tendon injuries, and post-surgical swelling.

Shockwave therapy
The gold standard treatment for chronic tendinopathy, including Achilles, patella, and elbow tendons, where conventional physiotherapy alone has plateaued. Short bursts of acoustic energy stimulate healing in degenerative tendon tissue.

Cryoultrasound therapy
Combines ultrasound and cryotherapy for acute and sub-acute soft tissue injuries, reducing pain and swelling while promoting tissue repair.

Running gait analysis
For runners with recurring lower limb injuries, gait analysis identifies biomechanical patterns that contribute to injury, and our running technique coaching service provides targeted correction.

FAQS

Do I need to be a professional athlete to see a sports physiotherapist?
Not at all. We treat everyone from elite athletes and semi-professional players to people who run twice a week, play five-a-side on Sundays, or simply want to stay active and injury-free. The goal of sports physiotherapy is to get you back to your sport, whatever that sport looks like for you.
How soon should I see a physiotherapist after a sports injury?
As soon as possible, ideally within 24–72 hours of the injury occurring. Early physiotherapy assessment establishes an accurate diagnosis, rules out serious injury (such as fractures or complete ligament rupture requiring surgical referral), starts appropriate pain management, and sets out a clear recovery plan. Waiting prolongs recovery and increases the risk of secondary problems developing.
Will my sports injury treatment be covered by health insurance?
In most cases, yes. Sports injury physiotherapy is typically covered under private health insurance policies. ALO Physiotherapy is recognised by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Bupa Global, WPA and Cigna.
Can physiotherapy prevent sports injuries?
Yes, injury prevention screening is one of the most valuable services we offer. Using VALD testing, movement analysis, and strength assessments, we can identify weaknesses, asymmetries, and biomechanical patterns that put you at elevated injury risk before an injury occurs. Pre-season screening, prehabilitation programmes, and running gait analysis are all available at ALO.
What should I do immediately after a sports injury?
Follow the PEACE & LOVE protocol recommended by current sports medicine guidelines. In the first 72 hours: Protect the area, Elevate the limb, Avoid anti-inflammatories in the acute phase, Compress the area, and Educate yourself about the injury. After 72 hours: Load gradually, Optimise recovery, Vascularise (gentle aerobic exercise), and Exercise progressively. Avoid icing directly on skin. Book a physiotherapy assessment as soon as possible to confirm diagnosis and begin guided rehabilitation.
