Diastasis Recti
Diastasis recti abdominus is an abnormal widening of the gap between your rectus abdominus muscle. Diastasis recti most commonly occurs in post-partum woman but can affect anyone. Our abdominal muscles play an important role in postural control, trunk and pelvic stability and movement and respiration. Diastasis recti can increase your risk of developing back and pelvic pain, as the muscles supporting the area have been damaged. Weak abdominal muscles can also result in weak pelvic floor muscles, which may contribute to incontinence or prolapse in the future.
During pregnancy, your abdominal muscles and connective tissues stretch to accommodate for your growing baby. Pregnancy hormones relax the muscles and ligaments to help this process. Pushing during delivery, or caesarean sections can increase the likelihood of developing a diastasis.
Diagnosis can be confirmed via ultrasound or through a physical examination by a physiotherapist.
