Causes of Ankle Pain
Sprained Ankle:
- Occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch or tear, often due to twisting or rolling the ankle.
- Symptoms may include swelling, bruising, pain, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot.
Lower Limb Fractures:
- Involves a break in one of the bones of the lower leg, ankle, or foot, commonly resulting from high-impact trauma or falls.
- Symptoms may include severe pain, swelling, bruising, and an inability to move or bear weight on the affected limb.
Over Exercising:
- Excessive physical activity or overuse of the ankle joint can lead to strain and injury to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
- Symptoms may include chronic pain, swelling, tenderness, and reduced range of motion in the ankle.
Incorrect Footwear:

Exercises for Ankle Pain
Heel Rasies
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding onto a wall or countertop for balance.
- Rise onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the ground. Engage your calf muscles.
- Pause at the top for 1-2 seconds.
- Gradually return to the starting position.
- Aim for 10-15 reps, completing 2-3 sets.
Ankle Tilt
- Sit on a chair with your legs extended in front of you.
- Inversion (tilting inward): Flex your foot and tilt it inward, bringing the sole of your foot toward the opposite leg.
- Hold for a moment, then return to the starting position.
- Eversion (tilting outward): Flex your foot and tilt it outward, moving the sole away from your body.
- Hold for a moment, then return to the starting position.
- Perform 10-15 repetitions for each direction.
Ankle Rotation
- Sit or stand with feet flat on the floor.
- Raise one foot slightly off the ground.
- Move your ankle in a circular motion for 5-10 circles in one direction.
- Reverse and perform another 5-10 circles.
- Switch to the other foot and repeat
